As I sit here and slowely drizzle coffee down my throat my headache melts away, my crabbiness flies off and my soul wakes up (an hour after my body does). Why am I frustrated? I called a coupe of food banks yesterday to see if I could volunteer but due to insurance stuff they can't allow kids there. I want to teach my kids to have a heart for the unfortunate but I have no idea how to move past donating money/things to the care organizations in our area. Any ideas? I have all the time in the world this summer to do stuff for other people but I can't find a way to do it. ARGGGGGG! (oh, and the picture represents the way I feel after my first cup of coffee in the morning but Eliannah is just drinking water.)

Jacqueline there is a place called the SLO AIDS Support Network that takes volunteers for all sorts of things--preparing and delivering meals to AIDS patients, driving them to doctors appointments, etc., all things you could potentially do with children in tow. They have a website, http://www.asn.org/ if you're interested. Many of these people are poor, in addition to having AIDS.
I am hoping to volunteer with them at some point now that we have our new car.

You know who LOVES having kids visit.. convalescent homes. This is a great way to get kids thinking about caring for others. If you want to go, we can go together with our kids.. it could be fun! Or, ask at the church if they know anyone who could use a visit, meal, or hand, and take the kids along. Neighbors are good for teaching the kids about caring for others.. like yard work for someone elderly?
I love how you have free time and you are immediately thinking of others. I need to do this. So pick something we can do with you :)
I know this kind of goes along the "just giving things", but what if you have your kids go through their toys for things that they don't play with anymore, or have out grown and then take them to a shelter or someplace similar... explain to them that the toys are going to kids who don't have money for them.
You might try asking the food bank if you could just deliver the items places...it's pretty understandable that they can't have little ones running around a warehouse of canned food and forklifts, but you might be able to just pull up in your van and do the delivering of food...just a thought.
