"Sir, would you like paper or plastic?"
I heard the voice but ignored it, just like I was ignoring all 3 kids as they played "ring around the shopping cart".
I was trying to talk to the teller about where I could recycle the CFLs I had just purchased (they contain mercury, don't put them in the trashcan when they burn out).
"Sir, ... " the voice said again,
I turned to look at the young man who was bagging my groceries.
"Paper" I said, hoping I hadn't heard him correctly, but from the startled look on his face as we made eye contact I'm sure he originally thought I was a boy. I haven't had that happen since jr hight. I guess with a pony tail, no make-up and a lumpy, shapeless sweatshirt ...

what's worse: being called a boy, or being called ma'am? it sounds so old ladyish - why not "miss"?
if ma'am is for old ladies, then what is "sir"? do I look like an old man???!!!!! That's it, from now on I'm wearing make-up to the store.
