I also try to make eye contact if I feel it is safe, but I didn't realize the large numbers you're dealing with there. And we can't and shouldn't shield our kids from everything, but at the same time, there is a reason why we feel compelled to protect their innocence. I don't blame you for wanting to keep your children from being accosted.

On another note,
Glad to hear you've got your tickets and that you'll be back soon!Joaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09874232257064291731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2681791511339385746.post-25776764149617838102008-09-08T15:27:00.000-07:002008-09-08T15:27:00.000-07:00I wish I had your compassion Brianna. I realize that mental illness is a problem but some of the homeless people here are VERY aggressive and full of explatives that I don't want my children to be accosted with. I guess I just need to be wise and take each situation as it comes.Jacquelynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10952038602431921394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2681791511339385746.post-24334097482921968972008-09-08T12:52:00.000-07:002008-09-08T12:52:00.000-07:00i try to either hand out food, or sometimes money....i try to either hand out food, or sometimes money. i also make it a point to smile and look in their eyes when i talk to them. to me if you're in an open, public place, smiling, saying hello and giving them something, it isn't particularly dangerous.

also, many homeless people do struggle with mental problems, and i think it's really important to be compassionate towards them. no one likes to talk about the mentally disabled in our country, but they're here, and it's terribly sad, and they need help. If nothing else, we can love them.Brianna Heldthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08224838737334231065noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2681791511339385746.post-76718932667399843542008-09-08T12:40:00.000-07:002008-09-08T12:40:00.000-07:00this is such a frustrating issue for me. i know i ...this is such a frustrating issue for me. i know i should do more, but there's the safety issue. i've got little ones with me almost always, and when i'm by myself i still wonder about safety. i hate to stereotype, but there are sometimes reasons to be concerned. i wish there was an easy answer.Kristen Borlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15486728360253790578noreply@blogger.com
